The truck has arrived. The container is at the dock. Unfortunately, the receiving crew is finishing another shipment, the staging area is full, and someone has just discovered that the incoming cartons need to be sorted by purchase order.
The freight is on time. The warehouse needs more time.
What happens next depends partly on a decision that should have been made before the truck left the terminal: Is this a live unload or a drop and pick?
With a live unload, the driver waits while the warehouse empties the equipment. With a drop and pick, the driver leaves the equipment for unloading and a truck returns to collect it later.
One ties up a driver and tractor. The other ties up equipment and space. The right choice depends on which resources your operation can afford to keep waiting—and for how long.
What Is a Live Unload?
A live unload is a delivery in which the driver remains at the receiving facility while the freight is unloaded, then departs with the emptied trailer or container.
For container drayage, the sequence generally includes terminal pickup, delivery to the warehouse, unloading, and movement of the empty equipment according to the carrier’s instructions.
Live unloading works well when the warehouse has a ready dock, available labor, suitable handling equipment, and a reasonably predictable unloading process.
The important word is predictable.
A palletized shipment that consistently takes an hour to unload is very different from a floor-loaded container whose contents need to be hand-unloaded, counted, sorted, and palletized. Both may arrive in identical steel boxes. Only one is likely to respect the appointment calendar.
Also, live unload does not automatically mean the driver unloads the freight. Driver assistance, warehouse labor, or a third-party unloading service should be agreed separately.
For the warehouse, the main advantage is straightforward: receive the shipment, unload it, and release the equipment without reserving a parking position for a later pickup.
The weakness is equally straightforward: when receiving falls behind, the driver waits with it.
What Is Drop and Pick?
With drop and pick, sometimes called drop and pull, the carrier leaves the loaded equipment at an approved location. The warehouse unloads it within the agreed period, then the carrier retrieves the empty.

The tractor departs; the container does not ordinarily get placed on the ground. Ground placement requires separate arrangements and suitable equipment.
A drop can give receiving staff flexibility to unload between other tasks or across shifts. But flexibility needs a deadline. “We’ll get to it” is a receiving intention, not an equipment-return plan.
Is drop and pick the same as drop and hook?
The terms sometimes overlap in conversation, so confirm the actual movements.
For planning purposes:
- Drop and pick: Deliver loaded equipment and retrieve it on a later visit.
- Drop and hook: Leave one unit and collect another ready unit during the same visit.
A recurring operation might allow a driver to deliver today’s loaded container and collect yesterday’s empty. That can make better use of the trip—but only when the empty is ready, accessible, and authorized for movement.
Do not price a reliable equipment exchange around an empty that exists mainly in someone’s optimistic email.

The First Question: How Long Does Unloading Really Take?
Ask a warehouse how long it takes to unload a container, and the answer may describe the time spent actively removing freight.
The driver experiences the whole visit:
Gate queue, check-in, dock wait, unloading, paperwork, and release.
That is the time you need for planning.
Review recent shipments by cargo type. Separate palletized freight from floor-loaded cartons, and straightforward receipts from shipments requiring inspection or extensive sorting. Look at both the typical visit and the difficult ones.
A two-hour average can conceal a pattern of easy one-hour deliveries mixed with occasional six-hour problems. Those exceptions can disrupt the carrier’s next appointment and your next inbound delivery.

The Second Question: Can Your Warehouse Handle a Drop?
A warehouse may prefer drop and pick without having the physical setup to support it.
Before choosing it, confirm three things.
A suitable place to leave the equipment
The location needs adequate access, maneuvering space, and a suitable supporting surface. Confirm that parking is permitted under the property’s rules and any applicable local requirements.
If the container must occupy the only receiving dock until it is empty, the drop has not created another unloading position. It has reserved the existing one.
A way to get it to the dock
If the driver leaves the unit in a yard position, who moves it when receiving is ready?
That may require a yard tractor and qualified operator or an additional carrier movement. A forklift crew and an empty dock do not, by themselves, solve that problem.
A safe unloading procedure
Unloading detached equipment requires attention to stability, movement prevention, dock access, and equipment condition. The practical question is whether the warehouse can safely receive, unload, and release the dropped unit—not simply whether there is an empty patch of pavement.
The Third Question: Which Clock Are You Paying For? (Detention, Demurrage, and Chassis Fees)
Container deliveries can involve several different time-based charges. Their names are similar enough to cause confusion, but they measure different things.
Driver detention concerns truck-and-driver waiting time beyond the allowance in the transportation agreement. Confirm the allowance, when timing starts and stops, and how additional time is billed. Do not assume every carrier includes two hours or uses the same billing increments.
Container detention, sometimes described as equipment per diem, generally concerns extended use of the ocean carrier’s equipment outside the terminal.
Demurrage generally concerns a container remaining at a marine terminal beyond its free time. Rail-terminal storage and other equipment arrangements have their own applicable terms. Choosing drop and pick may reduce driver waiting while increasing equipment time. It does not make all the clocks stop.

Live Unload vs. Drop and Pick Cost Comparison
The useful comparison is the total expected cost to complete the movement, including empty retrieval and return.
Consider this deliberately simplified example.
Hypothetical figures only—not Rushmore rates or market quotations. Assume the underlying transportation cost is otherwise identical, and compare only the additional costs caused by the unloading arrangement.

That is the decision in miniature: unloading duration, retrieval cost, and equipment time determine the result.
Real quotes should also address unsuccessful pickups, additional yard moves, applicable terminal charges, and any differences in the underlying transportation rate.
The Most Expensive Communication Gap: “It’s Been Empty Since Yesterday”
Completing the unload is only one milestone. Dispatch also needs to know the equipment is ready, arrange retrieval, and complete the authorized return.
A warehouse can finish on time and still create an avoidable delay if nobody sends the empty notification.
Agree in advance on:
- Who reports that unloading is complete.
- Which container or trailer number must be included.
- Where the empty is located and how the driver can access it.
- The notification cutoff for arranging pickup.
- What happens if unloading runs late or the return location changes.
A useful message identifies the unit, confirms that it is empty and accessible, and provides the location and pickup hours.
“Done” leaves too much room for interpretation.
Also distinguish ready for pickup from returned. Equipment charges may depend on the completed return under the applicable terms, not the time the warehouse removed the final carton.
Sometimes the Best Answer Is a Mixed Approach
Your warehouse does not need one unloading method for every shipment.
Live unloading may fit routine palletized deliveries. Drop and pick may fit labor-intensive floor loads, seasonal surges, or shipments that need a longer receiving window.
The important condition is that drop equipment keeps moving through the yard.
If containers arrive faster than the warehouse can unload and release them, a drop program can hide the backlog temporarily. Eventually, parking positions and chassis become scarce. The receiving bottleneck is still there; it now takes up more space.
Use drops to manage timing variability, and address persistent shortages of labor, dock capacity, or staging space directly.
